juniper seeds

Guess what, reader?
Today is the first day of June.
Oh how I adore this month!
I especially enjoy
watching the prairie dogs
forage in the meadow!
I recall the times when
Johnny and I would run
through Mr. Thompson’s yard.
What a jovial old man
Mr. Thompson was.
I can still taste his
meatballs on my tongue!
I remember the days
Jones would carry me
through the fields,
as we sang wonderful melodies of old.
The days are still fresh in mind
when Lil’ Timmy and I would
swim in the Allegheny River
and fish for largemouth bass.
I yearn for times I would
sit with Edith by the brook,
as we chewed on juniper seeds.
We chewed until the sun set,
until my father called from the hills.
One fateful day of chewing,
Edith accidentally chewed
on an acorn laced with cyanide.
Poor Edith soon passed away.
And I was the only one who attended her funeral.
Because Edith was a reclusive pickpocket,
and her parents did not care for her too much.
