ordering “mode”

When I see a piece of pie on a dessert menu, and I want it “a la mode,” I like to ask the waitress, “Do you guys have any ‘mode’?” Confused at first, the waitress usually eventually smiles and says, “You mean ‘ice cream’?” To this, I say, “Yes – if you wanna be all ‘American’ about it – yes, ice cream.”
